Business Coach
I started my career studying Accountancy while working for a Government Dept.
After that I worked for 3 coroporates – in Exporting and Financial Services – the last being AGC Finance, owned by the Westpac Bank
During that time I saw many great opportunities come across my desk and realised that ”doing my own thing” was what I wanted.
So, I started on my business ownership journey. I have owned 7 businesses, from owner operater to med/large to fully managed. These have been across a number of different sectors.
After selling a large business to an international company, I was unsure of where to next. I took some time to consider how my career should move forward.
I had enjoyed a largely positive experience with coaches in my own business and thought on how positive it would be to help business owners grow and do better.
I had an option to complete a Business Management Degree (after studying Accountancy for 2 1/2 years ), develop my interest in Property or
I could apply my 20+ year’s experience in business (mainly small business) in a practical way.
I decided, after being approached, to join the Coaching Industry and became an Advisor and shareholder at Advantage Business.
I have now been ”in the game” for 9 years and have engaged with more than 150 businesss.
The time has been rewarding (and challenging). as business owners grapple with the increasing complexity of business in today’s environment.
I have to tell you: the basic problems are just the same as they were when I started my own first business.

Malcolm Jensen – My Story
I spent the first 5 years of my working life in Govt. and corporates – in Meat Exporting and Financial Services where I also studied accountancy.
After spending 2 years in lending and sales I had the opportunity to see how large organisations used process to ensure good outcomes.
I then started to realise my passion for ”doing my own thing” and for Small Business.
I have owned (and operated at first) 7 different businesses ranging in size from me and 1 other, to 5 employees, and then 200.
Some were successful, some weren’t. During that time I learned some hard and very valuable lessons, and I use these to help clients navigate the business ownership landscape.
I love small business and working with those people who invest in and risk a lot to complete their own business journey.

In 2008 I engaged my first business coach. This transformed my business life through the value of independent thought, the introduction of discipline and accountability.
To be fair, I wished that I had done this MUCH earlier in my business ownership journey.
I need also to say: not all business Coaches are the same, or good, or add value.
I also need to say: not all business owners are open to the journey.

I had been in Business for more than 20 year’s and wanted to sell my business.
I did not know how to do this and engaged Malcolm to show me a plan to selling my business.
He provided me with a clear plan and actions – real life things to do to and put in place ways that held me and my staff accountable for making the changes we needed to make.
The process took about 18 months – and we were able to sell the business for a sum I was very happy with.
At the time I met with Malcolm, my business was struggling, we were barely able to meet our monthly commitments.
I was tired and run down and working long hours. I was asking myself – ”why am I doing this?”
With Malcolm’s support we made some urgent changes, returning the business to profitability and easing the Cashflow constraints.
After this initial work we have now put a plan in place to grow the business.
Once we have achieved some targets we will begin to prepare the business for sale – I now feel much happier and I can see a way forward.
We had big issues with staff – poor performance, high turnover and poor morale.
Working with Malcolm we ‘went back to basics’ – we looked at who was doing what, we agreed clear performance outcomes with staff, decided on how to measure these and we dealt with those who did not share our vision.
We also looked at our recruitment and on-boarding processes and we think we will do better in this area going forward.
All in all – it was hard, but well worthwhile.
